An art festival is a special event. The Think Design Magazine art festival taking place from the 27th to the 30th of December at Royal Phuket Marina is focused on promoting various forms of art, specifically Thai artists and Phuket culture in general. This continues to be the focus of our mission, to make Phuket a cultural destination for the good of all residents, tourists and locals alike. No more, sea sand and hangover as the totality of the Phuket vacation. Once people realize that Phuket has much more to offer, the richness of a vacation to our island in paradise will grow in leaps and bounds.
At the Think Design Art Festival over 200 artists will exhibit. Painting, ¬sculpture, performance art, video art, music, spoken word and many other special events. Painting and video inside the Convention Center while music, sculpture and others on the boardwalk. A portion of the proceeds will benefit two Phuket charities, Phuket Has Been Good To Us Foundation and Soi Dog Foundation..

Nalidsa is an award winning self taught artist who originally hails from Bangkok. In 1992 she was awarded the prestigious Young Thai Artist Achievement Award. In 2002 she was commissioned by the Thai Baan Museum in Ubon Ratchathani to do a large wall mural depicting the daily life of a rural Thai fishing village. She was also commissioned by The Green World Foundation in Bangkok to do a series of four original acrylic paintings with environmental sustainability as the theme. Nalidsa works in acrylics, oils, pastels and mixed media to create her folk style art which is often inspired by her travels and her local life observation. She currently resides in Penang, Malaysia.
Originally from Nakhonsithamrat, a town where he found artistic expression hard to come by, Rappepat currently lives in Songkhla where he teaches art at the University there. He has great appreciation for the Phuket art scene and he aims to exhibit here more often and in more varied galleries. When Rappepat begins to work on a new piece, he starts with a charcoal sketch on canvas or whatever new material he has chosen to work on. This is an initial formal exercise to lay out the composition and most surely will not resemble the final work at all. He focuses on not copying any current styles or methods; he is in a state of constant exploration, trying new materials, new ways to give his work texture and body. He is very proud of his experimentation, and finds each new technique very rewarding.

His works speak to his audience about the realities of life. But the artist himself takes his time to connect directly with his audience. “I really encourage them to go forward with this [passion for art]. I’m an emerging artist myself but I would go to universities and schools and give lectures to boost up their spirits,” he told me.

As a student of the Sciences, Sejal Surendra Sood practices the arts as an intense study of life inside and around us. She graduated with a degree in mathematics from MIT. Her time at MIT immersed her in the theoretical beauty and infinite possibilities present in the world before us, allowing her to question the laws of society and begin practicing the laws of nature. The intense training in thought she received at MIT made for a seamless transition into the arts.
Rejecting performance as the sole purpose of dance, Sejal explores movement vocabulary within the private walls of her studio as well as in the open air around the world. It is the embodiment and living energy of dance that translates into her works of art.
Under the modish contemporary façade of Christian’s work lies a classical working approach, re-utilizing traditional painting techniques used by the Flemish masters thereby continuing an ancient tradition but in new, daring and innovative ways. Christian’s uniqueness lies in his radical choice of strong colors and his mixture of oils and acrylics, usually preferring to combine them with bold shapes. His works are deeply powerful and compelling in the way they capture light and space, translating his desire to create large paintings. Christian’s studio, Warp 54, is located in Bangkok on the shores of the Chao Phraya River behind the Portuguese mission in an old warehouse built by the Japanese in 1940. The Belgian artist gets inspiration for his paintings from impressions and experiences in both cultures he has lived in and his quest to create beauty is a never ending evolving process. His approach is highly emotional and the result is a visual feast of colors of life. Each canvas emanates layers of turbulence with impeccable style and sensuality.
The Spanish artist Gomez Bueno has created a diverse and amazing collection of work in the last twenty years which places him far from the stereotype of the surf artist, which he seems to embrace. His paintings, which feature cartoon like drawings at times, presented in vibrant colors, are a mix of political messages and social commentary in a fast paced pop culture style. His subjects cover the range from current events to movie memorabilia and beyond. They also include a large selection of Los Angeles surfing culture criticism as well. We had the great pleasure at Think Design Magazine to be the first publication in Asia to interview him. Originally from Santander, Spain, he has lived in Los Angeles for many years and continues to be inspired by the crazy nature of the city which can drive some people mad.
